Paradoxical Android

Where do the days disappear to? I remember floating painlessly through the season of give and take, and now I discover I've landed close to the eve of a another new year. I posted my Christmas message, like so many bloggers do, but without giving any real thought to when I might post again. The days passed and I realised, with some alarm, that I hadn't actually missed the act of writing for the blog. And, until today, calling a halt with a Christmas wish was beginning to seem like a perfectly reasonable Square Sunset.

So, what happened? The truth is, I can't put my finger on it. And when I get close to explaining the way I feel, I'm reduced to seeking refuge in nonsensical theories. Perhaps Santa did a spot of rewiring on the naughty boy who forgot to leave out a glass of sherry and a mince pie? More likely, I've soft-landed in a place of new discoveries. Descending under a parachute, strapped into my holiday harness, the familiar has taken on a fresh and appealing look. The new comes tied with ribbons of promise. In short, there have been distractions, and even though they have positioned themselves some distance apart, around our home, their power is unrelenting. Haruki Murakami on my desk, Paul Murray in the lounge, and my new Samsung Galaxy phone preoccupying me in the same way Dinky Toys would have done, in my childhood. Whilst the attraction of good books comes as no surprise, the phone phenomenon caught me out. Mobiles have never really done it for me. But this little cutie lights up at the merest touch and has no inhibitions when it comes to displaying a dazzling array of apps. I guess when you finally have proof that the world can fit into your pocket, it's little wonder things get a bit strange, while some sections of the old grey matter play catch-up. Bear with me, I'm sure I'll be feeling better in 2012.

Happy New Year!

  1. Most people stop blogging over Christmas - it's completely normal behaviour - hahahaha. Hope your Chrissy went well and have a cracker of a New Year (it's New Year's eve here in Australia - midday) - see you next year :)

  6. Happy New Year, Martin! Glad to hear you've been having fun playing with your new toys, and really you *are* allowed to take a break from blogging, you know! I like the photo too.

  7. But the best distractions are family ones at this time of year, and I’m sure you had plenty of those. As a self-confessed gadget freak I can see how you were absorbed by your new toys. Now I’m off to have a look at the year’s top ten apps (according to the Times). I’ve also just downloaded iFPoems, so I think an hour on the iPad is called for.

  8. Oh, no, you are not allowed to ride off into the sunset. I'm glad to see you posting again, and Speckly Woo is on track to be the next Man Ray, or Woman Ray.

  9. Oh my... First, Happy New Year to you too Martin!

I'll be honest, the rather lackadaisical post I finally got round to posting last night was not the one I originally planned on posting. I chickened out of mooting this very question. But the question is still there, and I think I will post it anyway.
I know I don't find the time to read blogs as much as I used to, but yours is one I always enjoy and would be sorry to see you go. Please don't!

And damn that iPhone of mine. I hate the fact that I am now too lazy to take proper pictures with my actual, rather good camera, simply because the iPhone is so clever and pretty, albeit significantly inferior!

I've decided not to receive awards here. Not that I am grouchy or unappreciative, but I am often tight for blogging time. I'd rather be posting something new and responding to your comments. A heartfelt thanks to all those who have considered me for a nomination.
